We have some very exciting news here at Integrative Health Matters. We have expanded our team of medical providers! We want to introduce you to Dr. Carmen Keith. We know you will absolutely love her—and all that she will bring to Tyler, TX—as much as we do… possibly even more.
Who is Dr. Carmen Keith?
Ahhh, where do we start… the good doctor’s passion for medicine started at the ripe age of seven. Yes, seven. When the rest of us were watching Bonanza with Pops and imagining ourselves as cowboys/girls riding off into the sunset, Carmen was practicing sutures on her dolls and asking her siblings to rate their discomfort on the pain scale any time someone took a tumble. Thanks to hard work and a brilliant mind, Carmen’s dream of becoming a doctor turned into a reality. She became double board certified in Anesthesia & Pain Management. Carmen completed her pain fellowship at Harvard University through Massachusetts General Hospital and spent the next 10 years in the field of pain management.
How did she come to practice functional medicine?
Great Question. Carmen was a traditional pain medicine practitioner. Her mindset started to shift when she found herself overworked, overstressed, overweight and was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 36.
After her diabetes diagnoses, Carmen started treating herself with the methods that she practiced with her patients. She ate within the serving guidelines of the food pyramid and exercised regularly. Nothing changed with her blood sugar or cholesterol after ten months. She then started wondering about her patients who were also having no success with these approaches. Something wasn’t right… Carmen shifted gears and really dug into identifying the root cause of her illness. After 6 weeks of clean, mindful eating and fortifying her body with nutrients that were previously depleted—the blood sugar readings on the glucometer started their decline. She had more energy, she finally felt rested, the extra weight fell off, and feeling healthy and well stopped being a wistful aspiration and became the everyday norm.
Her personal experience with her illness and recovery process reshaped her perspective on her career. The traditional methods she had been prescribing were not accomplishing healing for Carmen or her patients. It was time for a change. Here began Carmen’s career in functional medicine. She spent the next few years training through the Institute of Functional Medicine, became a certified IFM provider, and started her own clinic—360 Living—in Missouri where she has seen miraculous healing and impacted the lives of so many by way of functional and integrative medicine. Treating people by looking at them as a whole—not just prescribing medication to mask symptoms, taking into consideration their physical, mental, and spiritual wellbeing when examining their health, using food as medicine… these are treatment methods that consistently result in optimizing health!
