In Functional Medicine, we treat the root causes of your symptoms. Many of the chronic health issues plaguing so many people can be traced down to the health of their gut. When your gut is out of whack, the rest of your body follows leading to leaky gut, acid reflux, autoimmune disease, and many others.
Bone broth is one of the most nutrient-dense, gut healing foods and therefore a great way to kick off healthier eating habits or help resolve symptoms related to poor digestion and other health concerns.
Bone broth is made from animal parts that are normally discarded, including bones and marrow, skin and feet, tendons and ligaments — all of which aren’t edible on their own but make nutrient-packed additions to slow-simmering stock. It is boiled slowly over several days — normally with veggies, an acid and fresh herbs — allowing all of the ingredients to release their stored nutrients.
You can make this amazing broth easily at home but, it’s important to keep a few things in mind. You want to make sure you are using good quality, organic bones and vegetables. In the bone broth process, you are leaching out all of the vital nutrients, minerals, and collagen inside of the bones. If you use bones that are full of chemicals then you’re leeching that out as well. We prefer Shady Grove Ranch meats and bones and we offer them for sale in our clinic.
1. Put a whole, organic free-range chicken into your slow cooker and fill the pot with enough filtered water to cover the chicken. Add lots of herbs for taste! Fresh herbs make AMAZING flavor but if you only have dried herbs on hand then use those. Cook your chicken for 4 hours on high then remove it and let it cool enough for you to remove the meat. Pull off the chicken breasts whole for an easy meal, then use the remainder of the chicken for chicken tacos, chicken salad, an easy shredded chicken dish, or soup!
2. Put the chicken carcass back into the crockpot with the fat, skin, wings, and dark meat (if you don’t eat it) still attached. You can even add a few chicken feet to the pot because they are full of gut healing collagen.
3. Add fresh, organic vegetables like celery, 2-3 carrots, one chopped onion, and 4 cloves of garlic. You can also add fresh or dried herbs like thyme, basil, sage, rosemary, and chives.
4. Fill the remainder of the pot with enough water to cover everything then add ¼ cup of Apple Cider Vinegar. The vinegar will help leech out the minerals from the bones.
5. Set your crockpot on low and cook your broth for 48 hours.
6. After 48 hours, strain your broth and discard the vegetables and bones. Fun fact- you can give the mushy bones to your pets!
7. Store your broth in a glass container in the refrigerator and enjoy one cup of broth a day or use it in soups and other recipes. You can also freeze the broth in muffin tins and have the perfect serving size whenever you need it.
Bone broth is easily digested and soothing to the digestive system, unlike many other foods that can be difficult to fully break down. By regularly drinking bone broth or using it in recipes, you can help promote healthy gut integrity while reducing permeability and inflammation. However, just adding bone broth to your diet may not completely solve all of your health problems. If you’re experiencing symptoms of leaky gut, arthritis, chronic pain, fatigue, or brain fog, call and let us help get to the root of your problems.
