Adrienne Carmack

Adrienne Carmack, MD, IFMCP

IHM Provider

Practical Experience

A “born and raised” Texan, Dr. Adrienne Carmack began her higher education at the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science. She graduated summa cum laude from Boston University with a BS in Human Physiology in 1998 and earned her MD with honors from the Texas A&M University College of Medicine in 2002. She chose a career in urology because she enjoyed caring for people with both medical and surgical needs. She trained in general surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and completed her urology residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami. After 15 years of urology training and practice, she became an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner in 2017.

Journey to Integrative Health

Soon after she entered private practice, she began to see patients with more complex, chronic problems; problems that didn’t show up at major university centers and that often weren’t effectively treated. Her search of the medical literature revealed that there were many well-researched integrative healthcare options that truly maximized the ability to honor Hippocrates’ guidance to “First do no harm.” This led her down a path of integrative medicine, which she has been studying ever since.

Adrienne’s journey to integrative medicine also developed as she became a mother and learned the health benefits of breastfeeding and explored childbirth options. She supports mothers’ choices in childbirth and is the author of The Good Mommy’s Guide to Her Little Boy’s Penis.

Passions

Adrienne believes in optimizing the environment for the roots rather than pruning the leaves whenever possible. She believes in taking a holistic approach to heal specialized issues as no disease is ever isolated to an individual organ such as the bladder or prostate. She is passionate about prevention and has developed protocols for kidney stone prevention, prostate cancer prevention, and the comprehensive treatment of recurrent urinary tract infections and overactive bladder. She is a provider in our wellness program and offers second opinions for those with urologic diseases. She loves the opportunity to work with mothers-to-be for preconception optimization of health.

Interests

Adrienne’s favorite quote is: “Be the change you wish to see.” Adrienne is a fiber artist and enjoys homeschooling her 3 children.
